If you recall from our ‘A Thanksgiving Wrap-Up’ post, during the month of November we mentioned we were holding a drive benefiting the mission of The Christmas Connection. We had a successful drive and were able to provide multiple games, toys and non-perishables to families in need around the Oklahoma City area.
In addition to the drive, a couple of us went out to their annual ‘Christmas Shopping Days’ event to donate some community service time. This event is essentially a day where their entire warehouse is converted into a shopping wonderland! Those shoppers who are able to come through are assigned a ‘shopper’ to help them obtain necessities for themselves and their families. They are taken through each department and at the end, are handed a couple bags of groceries to help with the holiday meal at home. The first couple of hours, we helped walk the customers through the infant section. The last hour or so, we helped in the non-perishables and grocery section.
Overall, The Christmas Connection served 987 families through just their ‘Shopping Days’ this year! Included in that number are 2,410 children who received new coats and new toys! Our monetary donation paid for the following items:
- 50 Youth Boys Coats
- 50 Youth Girls Coats
- 37 Junior Sizes Zip-front Fleece coats
- An entire toy order including 92 games and toy sets (NCIS Board Game, Disney Wheel of Fortune Game, Dino Train Racing Set, Touch N Sing Farm Block Sets and Vehicle Block Sets, and 13” Baby Dolls)
We also donated a Nintendo DSLite that went into a raffle. We’re sure the winner of that raffle is a happy camper!
Although there are so many children and families in need, we know every little bit helps! We made a big impact on the Christmas Connection’s toy and clothing departments and we’re thrilled we were able to do so!
This is a marvelous organization that does so much for the community year round. We’re thankful for having been a part of it this holiday season. I know a couple of us will be back next year to help again. It was truly a great time!
Happy Holidays to all!
